All pottery is handmade from start to finish in my home studio. All work is first fired to 1940*F, this is called the bisque firing. In this process most of the moisture is removed from the clay but it remains porous enough to hold the glaze. Glaze application is the next step after I rinse all the work once it cools down from the bisque firing. After the glaze application is finished and cleaned up the pieces go back into the kiln for the glaze firing. In this firing, the kiln will reach 2232*F, this step, including the cool down to a temperature I can handle the pieces, takes roughly 24 hours. Most of my work is complete after inspection and sanding the rough bottoms at this point. Some work will go back for one last firing for additional surface design such as gold or iridescent luster. For a third firing, the pots will only be heated to about 1300*F, a much quicker firing than the previous firings. While all these steps remain the same, and very predictable, nothing else in pottery is. Every kiln opening is a surprise! Each piece is 100% unique, and like handmade, perfectly imperfect! All of my work is one-of-a-kind and made with love and intention!
